Teaching teenagers about insurance can be challenging. Assurant’s “insurance store” at the Junior Achievement Discovery Center in Atlanta hopes to change that by making the learning experience fun with its custom 12-foot touch screen wall and iPads for children to play interactive learning games. Creating the store to improve children’s financial literacy is just one of the ways Assurant and its employees continue the Company’s strong tradition of giving back to the communities where it operates.
“From teaching children about financial literacy to breaking a Guinness World Record, our employees find creative ways to donate and volunteer in their hometowns,” said Shawn Kahle, executive director, Assurant Foundation and vice president, corporate communications, Assurant. “We celebrate our employees who bring the ‘Assurant Cares’ message to life. Their generosity, combined with the charitable programs of the Assurant Foundation, positively affects individuals in need.”
The Assurant Foundation® 2013 Community Giving Report highlights employee volunteerism as well as detailed financial support provided to Assurant’s charitable partners. Assurant’s charitable giving is focused in three areas: health and wellness, homes and property and local hometown help.
Assurant encourages employees to give back by providing eight hours of paid time off each year to volunteer for charitable causes. Through the Assurant Foundation’s matching gifts and grant programs, the Company provided more than $2.7 million in financial support to over 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Other outreach programs of the Assurant Foundation include the Company’s annual United Way campaign, which raised more than $1.6 million in donations to support local United Way chapters.
