BB&T’s mission of making the world a better place to live includes two important tenets: 1) helping our clients achieve economic success and financial security, and 2) making the communities in which we work better places to be. BB&T’s participation in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout our footprint assists us in these two tenets as well as presents a customer development opportunity for the Bank. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. IRS certified volunteers are available to prepare basic tax returns and answer questions by those in attendance. Utilizing the BB&T Bank Bus allows tax preparers from the VITA coalitions to provide services in neighborhoods that otherwise would not have access to them.
As a result of participating in a VITA site, several households are able to receive free income tax preparation, and many receive a tax refund because of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), education tax credit, or child care tax credits. VITA coalitions also encourage their clients to save their refunds by providing additional resources – such as financial education and savings programs.
BB&T VITA began this year in Alabama and will span the 13 state footprint, closing out tax season in Texas. Over sixty events are scheduled from mid-January to April 15 at community centers, health care facilities, employers, high schools, and other neighborhood venues. BB&T remains focused on living out our mission, through partnerships like this that make the communities in which we work better places to be.
Congratulations BB&T Corporation!
