There are over 1.2 billion young people around the world, each with their own dream of how they want to realize their individual potential. But what happens when young people lack access to the skills needed to achieve their ambitions?
At Barclays, we want to help the next generation achieve their ambitions through our “Five Million Young Futures” commitment. Young people are our future colleagues, customers and clients; our future neighbors, small business owners and government leaders. Helping them achieve their ambitions is the right thing to do – it’s critical to the long-term success of our business and the world we live in.
Through programs focused on enterprise, employability and financial skills, we’re giving millions a platform to achieve their goals, build their own businesses, get jobs and become financially independent. We can use our skills and experience as a bank to achieve a positive impact beyond a financial contribution.
In the 2013, nearly 4,500 employees in the Americas volunteered in more than 900 events. Opportunities to make a difference include teaching children about financial literacy, participating in mentoring programs to prepare at-risk high school students for college, conducting mock interviews for adults, revitalizing local parks and schools, and serving food in local pantries and shelters. In July 2014, more than 700 summer interns, new hires and recent promotes revitalized parks and schools across New York City. All of these efforts ensure community members and students have access to clean and inviting spaces to learn and grow.
