Over the past few months, Fifth Third Bank has partnered with local organizations and government agencies to reach unbanked and under-banked consumers in its communities. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Fifth Third employee volunteers promoted and supported free tax preparation services in Fifth Third banking centers and national tax preparation centers located in low-to-moderate income areas.
As a result of successful partnerships with community organizations, free tax preparation services were provided to over 6500 individuals, totaling more than $4,214,890.00 in refunds and $1,272,163.00 in Earned Income Tax Credit. In addition to tax preparation services, Fifth Third Bank provided financial education workshops and extended banking services to individual’s receiving tax preparation assistance.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax assistance for tax payers who make $54,000 or less per year, individuals with disabilities, and individuals with limited English proficiency. Fifth Third Bank’s VITA partnerships spanned multiple states including, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee.
Fifth Third Bank’s support of VITA aligns with its belief that lives are improved when people have the knowledge and tools to make wise financial decisions.
