John Deere Financial employees are passionate about helping children develop reading skills. That’s why the Company works closely with Everybody Wins! Iowa, a nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing literacy among low-income elementary students. “We are proud to work so closely with this organization,” said Bret Thomas, Executive Vice President, Global Operations, John Deere Financial. “Our efforts will help improve Findley Elementary students’ literacy, fluency, and comprehension skills – which are vital to their future educational success.”
The “Power Breakfast” reading program, which began at Findley in December 2012, has received positive results from students, volunteers, and teachers. In the current school year, John Deere Financial mentors have logged 284 volunteer hours, read 1,049 books and over 34,105 pages. This includes several financial literacy books.
“Our students enjoy the program for a number of reasons,” says Rick Miller, Findley Elementary School Dean of Students. “Students like when their favorite volunteer explains the meaning of words, helps them patiently with a challenging book, or identifies different vowels or nouns. But most importantly,” Miller says, “students are excited about reading with the same volunteers next year. The stability of this program is critical to their success.”
As part of its ongoing relationship with Findley, John Deere Financial sponsors a pizza party for students who read 400 minutes outside of school, provides school supplies for every student, supports the Junior Achievement program, helps fund a 4th grade field trip to the Science Center of Iowa, and much more.
Congratulations to John Deere Financial!
