SunTrust Banks, Inc. has partnered with the Living Classrooms Foundation for nearly a decade to support its mission, programs and initiatives, which are significantly aligned with SunTrust’s purpose of “Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being.”
Founded in Baltimore, MD, in 1985, Living Classrooms strengthens communities and inspires people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training using urban, natural and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” The foundation’s programs emphasize academic achievement and school completion, job preparedness, and all-important life skills—including financial literacy—to residents in distressed and low-income communities.
SunTrust operates a financial literacy center at the Living Classrooms-run POWER House (Providing Opportunities to Work, Expand and Rise) Community Center in Baltimore. All classes at the SunTrust Foundation Financial Education Center are taught by bank volunteers and include topics such as saving, budgeting, and prioritizing to meet needs on a limited income. The POWER House serves more than 60 adults and 40 children each day.
SunTrust also delivers financial education through Living Classrooms’ Project SERVE (Service-Empowerment-Revitalization-Volunteerism-Employment training) program. SERVE provides on-the-job training for 150 unemployed and disadvantaged young adults per year. SunTrust teammates volunteer to offer financial education and coaching to adult participants.
A strong grounding in financial literacy is a crucial element in building self-sufficiency and creating economic security. SunTrust’s support has enabled Living Classrooms to deliver high quality financial education where it is greatly needed in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
