What do “Must-Have Marvin” and “Can’t-Wait Willow” have in common? They’re the names of two fun-loving characters in the Shine Bright Kids book series SunTrust teammates use to teach elementary-schoolers the importance of making good financial decisions. And since making wiser choices starts with early learning, Marvin and Willow’s adventures have helped SunTrust make a positive impact on the lives of future generations.
Reading Shine Bright Kids kicked off in April, when the company’s Community Development Managers made it their mission to partner with Title-1 schools to create CRA-qualified volunteer opportunities. SunTrust reached 4,500 students during Financial Literacy Month, and the program was so positive, the initiative is still going strong.
Through light-hearted lessons, Marvin and Willow focus on a character trait or life skill, like putting people before possessions, having a good attitude or setting and reaching goals. At the conclusion of the stories, teammates also guided students through activities that explain “needs versus wants” and “saving versus spending.”
SunTrust teammates are dedicated to the company’s purpose of Lighting the Way to Financial Well-Being and can often be found teaching financial education through their volunteer efforts. Last year, teammates logged more than 220,000 hours giving back in ways that advanced financial well-being, including reading to children, teaching financial basics and providing access to tools and education that alleviate people’s financial stresses.
Congratulations SunTrust Banks, Inc.!
