During the 2013-2014 school year, TSYS team members in Columbus, Georgia, took their talents to the classroom to help children at Downtown Elementary Magnet Academy and Shaw High School, TSYS’s Partners in Education.
Team members tutored DEMA students in math and reading. Each department at TSYS was matched with a class at DEMA and one day each week team members went to the school to work with students. In addition, some team members volunteered to mentor students before and after school. Students also visited TSYS’s Riverfront Campus for various activities.
At Shaw, team members conducted mock job interviews with juniors and seniors, provided math tutoring and helped students prepare for scholarship interviews. Also, team members involved with Toast Masters coached Shaw students on public speaking and effective communication skills.
“The kids always love to see someone from TSYS,” said TSYS team member Phil Martin, who mentored first-grade students in reading. “They were always excited, even begging, for the privilege of going to the library so they could read to me. Over the year, I noticed the low readers were much better than when the year began.”
TSYS team member Rebecca Stephan, who mentored third graders, said: “The kids that participated were really excited each time we came. They liked to take the time to not only read to us but to share things in their lives. The teacher told me that the students’ reading marks went up several points by the end of the year.”
